Stuck in My Head: L.B. Rayne

The guys over at Doogtoons have created 80’s singer L.B. Rayne. The Indiana Jones song is not only amazing it’ll be stuck in your head. I don’t like posting videos on my site, but this is exceptional. Showing this video to friends, most think it’s a legit 80’s video. Enjoy!

Podcast: You Look Nice Today

During the summer many podcasts tend to slow production or even go on hiatus. I encounter this problem every summer and I’m always looking for a podcast to fill the void. While watching TWiT Live a couple weeks ago I heard Leo talk about Merlin Mann’s new podcast, You Look Nice Today, and I didn’t consider listening to it because I find much of Merlin Mann’s stuff a tad boring. Not until I saw You Look Nice Today in the top ten comedy section of iTunes did I decide to give it a listen.

From first listen I’ve fallen for this podcast. YLNT is simply three, very witty guys talking about nearly everything. It’s hard to put a pin on what they talk about but it’s nothing like any other podcast. For example, the guys were considering renting a store where they would sell Christmas trees, but only out of season would they sell the trees.

The podcast has no advertising, no gadget news, no movie news. It reminds me of the casual conversations I’ve had with friends late at night. This isn’t like any other podcast I’ve heard before and YLNT could easily take the place of a subscribe podcast.

iPod Game Phase, Reviewed

I reviewed the best game on the iPod a few months ago on Macapper. Here’s the review:

iPod games up to this point have been lackluster and unoriginal. The card and board games I have seen before don’t seem to be worth the $5 asking price. Harmonix, the creators of Guitar Hero and upcoming Rock Band, are out to change that with their new iPod game, Phase.

Phase is the first music based game on the iPod (unless you consider iQuiz music based) and takes advantage of your existing iTunes library. No paying for overpriced downloadable content like on the consoles. With Phase, a playlist in iTunes is created to upload the songs you want to play during the game. Uploading takes a little bit longer because more song information is needed, presumably to align the game play with the music. Phase does come with music (including a song by Freezepop for the GHII fans), but picking your own music makes it so much more fun.

Phase in action

Game play is simple. The left, center, and right buttons are for matching the green circles and the scroll wheel is used to follow dotted blue trails. The mixture of the two controls make this game challenging, but enjoyable. There are the usual difficulty levels and the harder the difficulty the better the game plays with the music you’ve uploaded. There are two game types, “Quick Spin” and “Marathon.” Quick Spin is for playing quick games and the Marathon game type is for playing songs that increase in difficulty. I tend to play Quick Spin the most, Marathon takes much longer to finish.

Phase plays beautifully on my 5.5 generation iPod and will also play on the new iPod Classic and Nano. Apple has still left out games on the iPhone and iPod Touch, but I don’t think this game would be the same on a touch screen. Phase’s ability to play any song proves that custom songs can be done on the iPods, so it’s just a matter of time.

Harmonix’s Phase is in the iTunes Store now and well worth $5. This music game is perfect for Guitar Hero fans or someone who wants more out of their music library.

Phase was and is still is a great, cheap, time-waster for the iPod.

r3fresh Web Showcase

I’ve decided to start a new series showcasing media on the net. There are countless sites with TV quality content that need to be promoted throughout the net. I already have a decent sized list, but I’m always looking for more content. If you find any worthy or even questionably worthy, shoot me an email. Content can be in the form of writing, video, pictures, or anything else experience-able.

Here is the first ( and relatively small) r3fresh Web Showcase:

Web Drifter, on Revision3, with once television host Martin Sargent is arguably one of the funniest shows on the site. Martin Sargent’s awkward personality mixed with the quirky, creepy people he follows make the show enjoyable. If you’ve yet to see a show, Martin interviews the interesting owners of even more interesting websites. The weekly video shows are roughly fifteen minutes and are free like the rest of the Revision3 content. Martin Sargent was once a host on Tech TV’s “Unscrewed” which is similar to Web Drifter. Here is the most recent episode of Web Drifter:

10 Blogs that I Read [Updated]

bookmarksDarren Rowse, of Problogger, recently wrote about his ten favorite blogs. They weren’t really his favorites, but more of just randomly chosen blogs from a bookmarking folder. I wanted to do the same, minus the “random” picking.

Before I go on with the list of ten, I wanted to say that I left out some of the larger blogs, (ie TechCrunch, Engadget, Gizmodo) they are already read by a large group of people.

  • Glennwolsey.com- I started reading this blog when I saw an article on the front page of Digg. The blog is written by a teenager from New Zealand and tends to be about Apple and Photography. The blog is well written and completely honest on what’s good and what’s bad. The (new) Glenn Wolsey Show is just as good as the blog and answers reader questions.
  • MacApper.com- I am a writer for MacApper, but that doesn’t mean I can’t read it and like it. Like the name, the blogs about Mac Applications and even though it’s written by 30+ people, it has a relaxed feel.
  • LifeClever- I just started reading this blog after reading the Apple keyboard packaging article. I get tired of all the productivity tips, but it’s still a great read.
  • Shaunlow.com- I found this blog while stumbling and I’ve found it really useful. “Blogging to Success” is the sites slogan and his blogging tips have become extremely helpful in the shaping my blog. Domain was sold!?
  • LadyBanana.co.uk- Just a personal blog (from the UK) with some very interesting opinions and stuff from around the Internet. She finds some really cool online quizzes and tools.
  • MaleWail.com- A really well written and hilarious blog by “Dave.” I also found this blog by using StumbleUpon. Recently, I’ve enjoyed the frustrated posts about creating a new theme.
  • Ob81.com- Ob81 (aka Howard O’Berry) has established a web presence not just with his blog, but on Digg and Pownce. His blog, is a must read for any Apple fan and his writing is quirky, yet enjoyable. If you ever need any help, Ob81 is the kind of person that will go out of his way to help, like he did with me.
  • TheWrongAdvices.com- A great source for tech news and blogging tips. Content is always frequent, interesting.
  • GeneratorBlog: Love those Internet generators? Yes? How about a whole blog of different generators. I’ll admit it I’ve spent lost many hours on this site.
  • ?- I couldn’t decide what I was going to put on this last one so I’ll leave it up to you. Got a favorite (indie) blog that you’ve started reading? Leave your picks in the comments.
