Light Bulb Side Table

March 12th, 2009 Posted in art, design

In my Design 122 class we were required to pick one everyday object and create something functional out of it. I decided to choose the most fragile of objects, a light bulb. The table, which would go great next to a couch, is about 22″ tall and made only of light bulbs (about 60) and hot glue.

Surprisingly, the way I glued them together created an extremely sturdy structure. I still wouldn’t use this if I had a dog or were clumsy, but I like how it turned out. Wasn’t able to afford a piece of tempered glass to go on top, yeah I’m a college student.

What do you think?

i think it’s very arty, but can you put things on it??

  2. Loren Says:

Yes it definitely looks cool and with some tempered glass or a piece of wood on top, it would function as a real coffee table…except that if it were knocked over it would make a HUGE mess.

Looks great. Can I ask what glue you used to stick the bulbs together.

Hot glue gun. But be careful, if you take it into a colder area it breaks apart almost on it’s own. The table was being carried from one building to another and it broke in two.
