Comment Moderation

December 11th, 2008 Posted in media

I’ve been on the fence on whether to moderate comments more strictly than I do now. I’m not talking about spam, (which I’ve been getting a ton of lately) but the rude, unneeded comments I’ve been seeing appearing on my blog. I’ve always been told that when you moderate comments readers will be unhappy, but I don’t believe that’s true. Nobody wants to be anonymously attacked when they’re reading my blog or any other site on the Internet. I’m writing this post because I will be strictly moderating comments. Don’t worry though, 95% of the comments made on this site are tame and commenters shouldn’t be threatened, they should happy to see the garbage disappear.

What do you think about comment moderation? Freedom of speech? Leave a comment.

I’ve been asking myself the same question. On one hand, it is kind of annoying to see that “comment awaiting moderation” message after you post on someone’s blog. I personally am worried it may cripple the conversation as comments to to other commenters are delayed. I guess it all depends on the speed of the moderator. On the other hand, like you said, it cuts down on the rude comments.

I would rather have less traffic than allow unruly people to comment here.
