A Multimedia Card Reader…For Your Mac

One of the features that seems to be included on every budget laptop and PC is a multimedia card reader. Unfortunately, when I think of a multimedia card reader I think of a cheap $600 eMachine with a small 17″ monitor and some crappy software. The problem with my thinking is that a multimedia card reader is extremely useful and my Macbook Pro doesn’t have one.
I know I can use an external USB card reader, but that takes one of my two precious ports on my laptop. So I did some research and found that I can buy a media card reader that I can insert into my Macbook Pro’s express card slot. The expresscard is the oval shaped opening (with a flap) on the left side of the Macbook Pro. There aren’t too many mac compatible express cards, but the Sonnet 21 in 1 Multimedia card reader is one of them, of which I purchased.
Installing the Sonnet multimedia card reader is extremely easy and takes less time than trying to remove it from the blister pack. Just pop in the the card and you’re set. No software or driver installation, it just works. Even better, the card reader sits flush with the Macbook Pro, so you never have to take it out. The card reader is compatible with 21 formats [below], 75% you’ve never heard of or will ever use. The SD card for my camera fits in snugly, but I did find some trouble with Sony’s Memory Card format. Since the card reader is made for so many formats the smaller formats take a few tries before finding the correct position. It’s not a big deal, it’s annoyance that can be fixed with use.
The Sonnet 21 in 1 Multmedia card reader is the best way to put a card reader in your mac laptop. It’s unobtrusive and can be left in your Macbook Pro without problems. The Sonnet 21 in 1 Mulitmedia Card reader is about $20 on Amazon and well worth the price.
