4 Sites That Haven’t Done Anything
Looking at a list of old bookmarks, I figured out why I consider the bookmarks “old.” All of the sites have executed a great service, but they never took it any farther.
Purevolume
If you asked me about Purevolume a year ago I would have said it was my favorite music site. If you were to ask me about it today I would feel much different. Purevolume has made it super easy to find the not-so-famous bands around the world.
After beautifully executing the idea (as well as the site design), Purevolume seemed to come to a halt. There hasn’t been anything new to surface. As Purevolume sits dormant, other music sites have taken hold and lost it’s place on my bookmarks bar. iTunes and Myspace Music have actually become my two site favs.
Onxiam
Probably the most innovative site, Onxiam could have been the first FriendFeed, but it never really changed after it was first released. Onxiam allows you to put all of your presences on the web in one place and share with others, which two years ago was almost unheard of, but today almost every every social network has some sort of profiles list.
ChaCha
ChaCha’s people search idea could have changed search forever. Having the option to have a real person find what you’re looking for was amazing and having the search work was even more exciting.
Too bad ChaCha never took their idea any farther. They have added the ability to use your phone, but I’ve had some horrible luck with it. I live in Boise, Idaho, and I asked what road was the MacLife store was on (keep in mind there is only one). I got a link to the Mac|Life magazine, which was greatly appreciated. ChaCha wants to grow their idea, but puts forth little effort.
DnScoop
The site value tool, DnScoop, is a mashup of different services around the web. I enjoyed using the site until I realized it was extremely inaccurate. On DnScoop, r3fresh.com’s PageRank was “0″ after using another service I was surprised to find out it was actually “5.” I really like having all of these stats in one place, but if they are broken old, then it isn’t worth it.
It’s disappointing to see great ideas slowly die and it’s expected in the competitive web field.
