5 New and Innovative Search Engines 2
You enjoyed the first, now it’s time for part two:
Internet search was made popular by companies like Yahoo!, Google, and Ask, but as these veterans of search evolve and create new things, who will be the ones to reinvent Internet search? Here’s the second list of (somewhat) new and notable search engines that are trying something different:

Songza: The most promising engine of the bunch, Songza brings together music from various music sites and contains it in a well designed, beautiful site. But Songza is more than just a search engine, it’s an internet music player that you can access on any computer. The ability to find music as well as create playlists puts Songza in competition with Google as well as iTunes and Deezer. The only problem Songza could run into is the dreaded record companies, but who isn’t threatened by them these days?

Wikia Search: The founder of Wikipedia is back and this time he’s delving into search with Wikia Search. Wikia Search doesn’t stray far from it’s Wikipedia roots and is simply just a search engine for Wikis. Wikia Search is one of the first wiki search engines on the net, but it will really need to work on it’s search results before anyone will ever use this. At the moment, Google will find wikis better than Wikia Search.

iStorez: Being called ‘The Brand New Way to Shop,’ iStorez doesn’t find the product you’re looking for, it finds the best websites that will sell what you’re looking for. Make sense? An example, let’s say you wanted to find an online store that sold bling jewelry. Instead of searching ‘jewelry’ in Google (and getting a bunch of sponsored links), iStorez will give you a small list of websites with their pictures. It’s an interesting concept, but will the common user understand it.

everystockphoto: Being a blogger and graphic designer, I’m always looking for free stock photos. Everystockphoto pulls free photos from various websites (like flickr) and puts them into one easily search-able place. The recent redesign makes it even easier to find what your looking for and the introduction of ‘collections’ makes it easier to download more than one file. Everystockphoto is promising, but I would like to see the ability to upload photos directly to the site instead of gathering it from other places.

YouTorrent: Looking for public domain elevator tunes (wink wink) on every torrent site can be difficult and time consuming. With YouTorrent, all of the files from the popular torrent sites are finally under one roof. Searching for elevator music was easy and I found a yet-to-be-released album, nice and completely legal.
Many of these search engines are made for a specific area, but will they trump big broad search engines like Google and Yahoo?
